Diagnosis

How do you know if you have Sleep Disordered Breathing (Snoring or Sleep Apnea)?

The only way to be sure is to have a sleep test performed. You can take a simple test at home called the Epworth Sleepiness Scale that will help you determine if you may suffer from a sleep disordered breathing condition. If you feel you have a problem, be sure to visit and or consult with your healthcare professional.

Since Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a serious medical condition it must be diagnosed by a physician. The dentist will work with your physician as part of the medical team in your diagnosis, treatment, and on-going care. Diagnosis is based on the results of an overnight sleep study called a Polysomnogram (PSG). Other factors that aid in determining OSA are patient evaluation and history. Determination of proper therapy should be made by joint consultation of your dentist and physician.

If you snore or have been told that you awake to gasp for breath during sleep, or if you are sleepy during the day, you should seek advice from your healthcare professional.
